Caen – PSG Preview<br /><br />Frustrating game for Caen last week against Toulouse (finished 3-3). Even if Caen proved to be very pragmatic and efficient and converted all their major opportunities, they had to deal with a referee that most probably had a bet on Toulouse.<br /><br />Referee Bastien simply invented 2 penalties for Toulouse and helped hosts get back in the game twice. Luck was also on Toulouse’s side as when the referee couldn’t do anything more to assure the draw, a missed volley attempt somehow ended in the net in the dying moments of the game.<br /><br />Caen certainly thinks of the draw with Toulouse as 2 points lost instead of 1 point won. This will surely make them more determined, if there is ever the need for extra determination against PSG.<br /><br />All Caen’s wingers (Bazile, Raspentino and Nangis) are in excellent form and the timing couldn’t be better since the only way to open up PSG is to attack the flanks.<br />
<br />PSG slowly became draw specialists. If until last round they used to reduce intensity only in away games, now PSG’s superstars got so lazy they began to take the foot off the gas in home games as well.<br />

The international break is like a cicada population. It comes sweeping across a great expanse, and while its stay is temporary, the wreckage it leaves behind is often devastating. And when it does leave, you know that before long, it’ll be back. But more than anything, it’s just plain annoying.<br />
<br />
Thankfully it's over for now, and Real Madrid has slipped through unscathed, despite having 14 players out on international duty. If anything, the squad’s gotten healthier! Cristiano Ronaldo will reportedly play this Sunday, and Zidane said, “Karim (Benzema) is as ready as he’s ever been.”<br />
<br />
So, Osasuna. An old club from Pamplona who have spent their existence ping-ponging between the Primera and Segunda divisions. Though, since the 80’s they’ve presided primarily in La Liga, and they’re back after a two-year spell in the Liga Adelante.<br />
<br />
But truthfully, Osasuna were perhaps more lucky than good last season. On the final match day of the Segunda season, they needed to win their game and get help in order to secure the last playoff position on a tiebreaker. Everything fell their way, they won all their following playoff matches, and boom, back in La Liga!<br />
<br />
So far, Osasuna have looked the part of a team who overachieved last season. They’ve struggled to create chances, and are banking on EPL outcasts Emmanuel Rivière and Fran Mérida to remedy that. Captain Miguel Flaño leads the back line, as he has the last 12 years, and he’ll have two defenders on either side of him in Osasuna’s 5-3-2, including his twin brother, Javier.<br />
<br />
Missing from Madrid’s squad list are Casemiro, James, and Marcelo (rest), as well as Keylor Navas and Isco (injury). Osasuna are the weakest team Madrid have yet faced this season, so the likes of Mateo Kovačić, Lucas Vázquez, and Nacho will likely see the pitch. A Modrić-Kroos-Kovačić midfield is something we’ve never seen before, and it’ll be exciting to see how they do.<br />
<br />
Real Madrid are actually staring down an enviable Liga schedule through September (Eduardo Alvarez wrote an interesting piece on this for ESPNFC). Barcelona and Atléti will enjoy pummeling one another in a few weeks, and Atlético are still winless in La Liga this season.<br />
<br />
Madrid will look to handily bury Osasuna to put the onus on Barcelona and Las Palmas to keep pace later in the afternoon. For Real, this is a chance to get back up to speed ahead of Thursday’s Champions League match against Sporting.

The Austrian Football First League or the Erste Liga as it’s called in German is the second highest professional division in Austrian football. From 2010, the league is called “Heute für Morgen – Erste Liga” which translates to “Today for tomorrow – First League” and implies the purpose of the competition itself – to develop players able to compete at the highest level.<br /><br />Ten teams compete in the league where the champion of the league is promoted into the Bundesliga, the second to last has to play relegation match against a team from one of the three regional leagues – Regionalliga West, Regionalliga Ost, Regionalliga Mitte. The three regional league champions have to play a home and an away relegation game with the 9th of First League for two slots in the First League. The last placed team is directly relegated from the First League into the regional leagues. Champions of season 2013-14 were SCR Altach. While First Vienna were the ones who were relegated directly.<br /><br />The team with the most wins in the Erste Liga and therefore direct promotions to the Bundesliga is LASK Linz, who has won it 4 times, the last time in 2006-07. LASK Linz are returning to the Erste Liga in the upcoming season 2014-15 and are the favourites for the quick return to the top tier.<br /><br />Teams are allowed to sign players during the two transfer windows that last from 3rd January to 2nd February and from 10th June to 1st September, while the league runs from July to June, with the winter break in December, January and February. The average monthly salaries are around €1,000 – €1,500. There are currently 46 foreign players plying their trade in the league.<br /><br /><br />There is a fairly low number of foreigners in the league which explains the fact that 79% of all transfers are on the national level. 11% of transfers bring players from abroad to the Erste Liga, while 10% of transfers account for player departures from the league to the foreign lands.<br /><br />From those 11% of transfers that came from abroad, the most came from the neighbouring Germany, followed by Russia and Croatia, both with a 12% share of foreign transfers. Germany is also the country where most of the players who transfer from Erste Liga end up, with 17%, while Turkey is the second most often destination with 11%.<br />
