This time last year Alan Pardew may well have been considered a leading candidate should there have been a vacancy for the top job at St George's Park.

Come the end of June, the Palace boss had distanced himself from the gig. He wants it - but not yet.

Yet in actual fact, a woeful second half to the 2016 season - FA Cup run apart - most probably put paid to any chances he had of succeeding Roy Hodgson.

Alas, his priority at the minute is surely keeping hold of his job at Palace. The bookies currently value him as 9/4 to be the next top flight manager out, second only to Tony Pulis - the West Brom boss whose future doesn't appear as secure as his side's defence right now.

That's what two wins in 2016 does for you. And a start to the season in which Palace were just seconds away from going three games without picking up a point.

Scott Dann may well have enjoyed a pint on his gaffer during the international break.
